Provigil (Modafinil) is a medication used to treat sleep disorders like narcolepsy obstructive sleep apnea or shift work sleep disorder. Provigil is a stimulant which is a similar ingredient used in many other weight loss products. It is used to induce wakefulness in patients and thus prevent daytime sleepiness. Many patients currently taking Provigil report weight loss. But being results on this medicine is used as a weight loss drug is still under consideration
Provigil can cause nausea
Provigil has a well-known side effect of nausea. Some patients feel nauseous all day and some actually come to the point of throwing up. In some patients this nausea and vomiting may also trigger weight loss. Although going this route to lose weight is far from healthy.
Provigil is basically a stimulant used to control sleepiness. It is well known that stimulants also lead to the suppression of appetite. As a result some patients taking Provigil find that they lose weight. An article in the August 23 2006 edition of The Wall Street Journal reports that Provigil is just one of many drugs with side effects that reduce appetite which is used to treat obesity.
The overall effect of weight loss for patients taking Provigil is still yet to be determined. Although many patients currently taking medication reporting weight loss many more tests must be done on this subject. Because the drug is a stimulant it can also cause an elevation in blood pressure and heart rate which can be dangerous for some patients. Also to use a drug to replace diet and exercise is not recommended by medical professionals.
