Brain death is the complete and irreversible loss of brain function. in most cases it is most often associated with physical death but need not be. Instead there are times when a body can be kept alive usually by artificial or mechanical means although it is not brain function. This is when the concept of brain death or to be brain dead is most often used.
brain death can occur when the subject is close enough to the hospital that medical personnel are able to keep the heart beating and oxygen and nutrient flow to cells in the body although there is no brain activity. As mentioned before this is usually done before it can be decided whether brain activity has ceased. Once that takes place there is very little likelihood of a recovery. but the decision to take a person of life support machines are usually handed over to the family after they consult their doctor.
a brain death can occur from many different factors but oxygen is a key to all of it. although they may not be related at all they can cause similar things happen in the brain. For example various forms of trauma cause bleeding and swelling of the brain. this can cause the brain to stop functioning. if the brain does not get enough oxygen a condition known as anoxia it will begin to die too. in an indirect way anoxia responsible for all brain deaths. . For example in cases where the brain swells the increased pressure will cause blood flow to be cut resulting in a state where oxygen can no longer reach the brain
