Saturated fats unsaturated fats trans fats good fats and bad fats make us crazy. Knowing the difference between these fats can help us to find low fat foods. Food labels can be confusing as well. We look at the amount of fat and believe it is a low fat food before we read the serving size. Here are some tips to help you find low fat food
Bad Fats

– 1 –
Avoid saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are usually from animal sources and includes meat and dairy products. Instead of avoiding these fats altogether selecting fat meats such as chicken turkey and fish. Choose dairy products that are reduced in fat or low fat as low-fat milk cheese and those made with skim milk.

– 2 –
Remove most of the visible fat from meat. Red meat is marbled” and has streaks of fat in the meat itself then removes most of the visible fat. Some cook the meat with fat on remove it before eating. This helps to remove some of the fat but food is not considered low in fat.

– 3 –
Avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats are man-made fats for cooking and includes many types of margarine and fat. Trans fats are made to stick at room temperature. Trans fats used for frying and baking avoid fried foods and baked goods when on a low fat diet

Good Fats

– 1 –
Eat foods such as salmon which. . are high in omega fatty acids. Although not considered low in fat the fat a “good” fat and healthy for you.

– 2 –
Use vegetable oil for deep frying foods. These fats are much healthier for you than trans fats but must be used sparingly.

– 3 –
Add olive oil to your diet in place of saturated fats. Olive oil is much more fat than butter for cooking.

Low Fat Foods and Tips

– 1 –
Read the nutrition label on food before buying. Check percentage of the DV for fat. DV is “daily value” is recommended. To be considered low fat the DV of the total fat content below 5 percent. The total fat includes saturated and unsaturated.

– 2 –
Buy low fat foods by reading the “demands” on the front of the pack. Some packages are labeled “reduced fat” or “low fat” depending on their DV of total fat. Make sure you read the nutritional information on the label as well.

– 3 –
Substitute low fat and reduced fat whenever possible. Instead of buying a cream soup buy a soup whose broth. Instead of buying half and half for coffee the use of skim milk or non-fat dry milk powder. Instead of buying tuna packed in oil buy tuna packed in water.”
