Patients preparing for heart surgery must anticipate changes in lifestyle to take a fresh period to match both the physical and emotional needs. This begins with preoperative adjustments to reduce postoperative discomfort and maximize a quick and healthy recovery. Maintaining a heart-healthy diet is one of the most critical changes, poor diet is probably a big part of cardiovascular problems that surgery is required. Balanced Nutrition Plan
Nutrition is important for good health, especially before hospitalization for heart surgery. Start with a balanced diet that includes adequate protein, vitamins, minerals and calories. This diet should contain a wide variety of foods from all four of the primary food groups: whole grains, fruits and vegetables, dairy and protein. Focus on complex carbohydrates that are high in fiber and control calorie intake by consuming smaller portions several times a day, rather than one or two large meals. Snack on fresh fruit and vegetables between meals if you are still hungry.
Limit Sodium Intake
Limit sodium intake to less than 200 mg per day to avoid fluid build up in the arteries. Do not add table salt to some prepared meals. Limit foods that are high in sodium canned soups and bouillon, processed (box) foods, canned vegetables, meats, sausages, bacon and salty snacks. In addition to salt in food, limit consumption of monosodium glutamate (MSG), commonly found in food served in restaurants. Talk to your doctor before using salt substitutes.
Avoid Simple Sugars
refined carbohydrates and simple sugars contribute to increasing levels of triglycerides (blood sugar) in your blood. Avoid desserts, sweets and refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta and rice.
Eliminating Foods high in cholesterol
Foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol can lead to thickening of blood vessels as well as plaque and fatty acids in the walls of arteries, so that they narrow. Examples of these foods to eliminate fried foods, salami and other meats, egg yolks, milk and milk products, cocoa, and palm and coconut oil. Replace these unhealthy saturated fats with healthier monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids such as oily fish (tuna, salmon and trout), lean meat, low fat dairy products and olive oil.
